Born in 1969, BREITLING creates the first self-winding chronograph movement: Calibre 11, a mechanism in which the spring is wound by means of an off-centre oscillating weight. This invention would make it possible to develop a whole range of chronographs called CHRONO-MATIC, immediately recognizable thanks to their crown placed on the left, a particularity due to the modular construction of the movement. At that time, the NAVITIMER was BREITLING's flagship model and therefore the first to benefit from this major technological advance.
The other essential feature of the CHRONO-MATIC is the calculation rule of aviation, controlled by the rotation of the outer bezel, which drives a sprocket and shaft acting on the inner bezel. This mechanical device guarantees an extremely accurate reading of the measurements made. The CHRONO-MATIC is powered by the BREITLING calibre 41LC (left crown) 38 jewels, officially certified chronometer by the COSC, like all movements driving BREITLING instruments.
